Smuttynose Half Marathon

Hello from New Hampshire. Just arrived at the Smuttynose half marathon in Hampton NH. Race starts at 10am, about one hour from now. Waiting for David to arrive. It’s brisk and breezy here, but looks super flat around here. Here’s hoping for a PR.

I’ve been up since 4:30am. Kids didn’t want to sleep last night so that’s not much fun. My wife stayed home with the kids in lieu of coming to the race. 2 hrs driving each way and three hrs hanging around Hampton probably not the most fun in the world. Though it won’t be easy staying home with two tired and grumpy children. I’m pretty sure I owe her one. Or two.

The walkers are about to start so I’ll go check out that exciting start. And maybe go change.

I’ll update later, hopefully not midrace. Read on for the exciting conclusion.

So we survived! Dave and I actually ran together the first ten miles (around 1:11 or so if I remember). Then he dropped me like I was an anchor. We were running a good 7:00 minute pace and he decided to drop it down into the 6:30′s for the last 5k. Oh well. Next time I’ll be ready for it. He took off down the road and I did what I could to finish. Respectable I’d say. I clocked in 46th with a 1:33:25 and he posted a 34th with 1:31:40.

Great job Dave.

Overall a very fun race. Pizza, soup, bananas, granola and ice cream after the race… oh, and free beer! Good times. Good weather. Nice fast course. I’d do it again!

Nice work. I think my PR for a half marathon distance is about 5 days.
